UNODC and FIA Commemorate World Day Against Trafficking in Persons with Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University Islamabad

Islamabad, 27 July 2023 - United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) collaboration with the Federal Investigation Agency with Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University successfully commemorated the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on 27 July 2023. The event witnessed an overwhelming display of solidarity from medical students, faculty members, distinguished guests, and esteemed partners, all joining hands to raise awareness and combat human trafficking.

Human trafficking is a grave human rights violation affecting millions worldwide, exploiting vulnerable individuals and subjecting them to various forms of exploitation, including organ removal, forced labor, sexual exploitation, and domestic servitude. In recognition of the urgent need to address this critical issue, the event focused on the broader issue of trafficking while specifically shedding light on the distressing concern of trafficking for organ removal.

The FIA building and Shifa Hospital Building were illuminated in blue, symbolizing hope, and solidarity in the fight against trafficking. A highlight of the event was the commemoration held at Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University, attended by medical students who are at the forefront of the fight against human trafficking. Speakers from UNODC and the FIA delivered powerful messages on the urgency to combat trafficking, emphasizing the role of medical professionals in identifying and addressing this crime.

Throughout the day, activities such as the distribution of T-Shirts, Caps, and Blue Heart Lapel Pins to students, and the placement of standees at prominent locations like Shifa Hospital, Islamabad Airport, FIA Headquarters, and the UNODC country office, aimed to raise awareness among the public and mobilize support.

The event also featured a social media campaign, with recorded messages from key partners aired on various platforms, amplifying the message against trafficking, and reaching a wider audience. Additionally, as a gesture of support, photos with Blue Heart Frames were shared on social media, symbolizing unity in the fight against trafficking.

Furthermore, the campaign extended its reach to renowned hotels in Islamabad, where Blue Heart Lapel Pins were distributed, and banners were displayed in their lobbies, encouraging the hospitality sector to be actively involved in combating trafficking.

"It is with immense pride and gratitude that we gather today to stand united against trafficking in persons. As a leading institution of education and healing, Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University recognizes the significance of our collective responsibility in combating this grave human rights violation," said Prof. Dr. Mohammad Iqbal, Vice-Chancellor of Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University.

"We are humbled by the overwhelming response and support we have received for this important cause. Trafficking in persons, particularly for organ removal, is a grave human rights issue that demands our urgent attention," said Mr. Alam Shinwari, Director Anti-Human Smuggling of the FIA at Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University.

Mr. Alam Shinwari, further expressed gratitude to UNODC and specially to Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University for their commitment and collaboration, emphasizing the significance of collective efforts in the fight against trafficking.

The event concluded with a note of thanks to all participants, urging everyone to carry the spirit of unity and determination forward in the ongoing fight against trafficking.

انسانی تجارت کے خاتمہ کے عالمی دن پر خصوصی سرگرمیوں کا انعقاد

اسلام آباد، 27 جولائی 2023 - اقوامِ متحدہ دفتر برائے انسدادِ منشیات و جرائم (یو این او ڈی سی) کی جانب سے وفاقی تحقیقاتی ادارہ، ایف آئی اے کے اشتراک سے شفاء تعمیرِ ملت یونیورسٹی میں 27 جولائی 2023 کو انسانی تجارت کے خاتمہ کے عالمی دن پر خصوصی سرگرمیوں کا اہتمام کیا گیا۔ اس موقع پر میڈیکل کے طلبہ، اساتذہ، معزز مہمانوں اور پارٹنرز نے یکجہتی کا مظاہرہ کرتے ہوئے انسانی تجارت کے خلاف جدوجہد کرنے اور اس کے بارے میں آگاہی بڑھانے کے عزم کا اظہار کیا۔

انسانی تجارت، انسانی حقوق کی سنگین خلاف ورزی ہے جس سے دنیا بھر میں لاکھوں افراد متاثر ہوتے ہیں، جس کے ذریعے کمزور افراد کو  مختلف طریقوں سے استحصال کا نشانہ بنایا جاتا ہے جن میں اعضاء نکالنا، زبردستی مشقت کرانا، جنسی استحصال کرنا اور گھریلو غلام بنانا خاص طور پر قابل ذکر ہیں۔ تقریب میں اس اہم مسئلے پر قابو پانے کی فوری ضرورت پر زور دیتے ہوئے اس کے وسیع پہلوؤں کو زیربحث لایا گیا اور اعضاء نکالنے کے لئے انسانی سمگلنگ کے مسئلے پر شدید تشویش کا اظہار کیا گیا۔

انسانی سمگلنگ کے خلاف جدوجہد کو اجاگر کرنے اور اس سلسلے میں امید اور یکجہتی کی علامت کے طور پر ایف آئی اے اور شفاء ہسپتال کی عمارتوں کو نیلے رنگ کی روشنیوں سے منور کیا گیا۔ شفاء تعمیر ملت یونیورسٹی میں منعقد ہونے والی تقریب میں میڈیکل کے طلبہ کی بڑی تعداد نے شرکت کی جو انسانی تجارت کے خلاف جدوجہد میں ہراول دستے کا کردار ادا کرتے ہیں۔ اس موقع پر یو این او ڈی سی اور ایف آئی اے کی جانب سے مقررین نے انسانی تجارت کے خاتمہ کے لئے فوری اقدامات کی ضرورت پر زور دیتے ہوئے اس جرم کی نشاندہی اور اس  پر قابو پانے میں طبی ماہرین کے کردار کو اجاگر کیا۔

عالمی دن کی مناسبت سے پورا دن مختلف سرگرمیوں کا سلسلہ جاری رہا، طلبہ میں ٹی شرٹ، کیپ اور بلیو ہارٹ لیپل پن تقسیم کی گئیں، اور شفا ہسپتال، اسلام آباد ایئرپورٹ، ایف آئی اے ہیڈکوارٹرز اور یو این او ڈی سی کنٹری آفس  کی نمایاں جگہوں پر لوگوں میں آگاہی کے پیغامات آویزاں کئے گئے جن کے ذریعےانسانی تجارت کے خاتمہ کی کوششوں میں فعال طریقے سے حصہ لینے پر زور دیا گیا۔

اس سلسلے میں سوشل میڈیا پر ایک خصوصی مہم بھی چلائی گئی، اہم پارٹنرز کی جانب سے ریکارڈ شدہ پیغامات مختلف پلیٹ فارمز پر نشر کئے گئے، اور انسانی سمگلنگ کے خلاف پیغامات وسیع تر حلقوں تک پہنچائے گئے۔ علاوہ ازیں، اس مہم کی حمایت میں سوشل میڈیا پر بلیو ہارٹ فریم والی تصاویر بھی شیئر کی گئیں جو انسانی سمگلنگ کے خلاف جدوجہد میں اتحاد اور یکجہتی کی علامت ہیں۔

اسلام آباد کے معروف ہوٹلوں میں بھی مختلف سرگرمیوں کے ذریعے اس مہم کے پیغامات کو اجاگر کیا گیا، جہاں بلیو ہارٹ لیبل پن تقسیم کی گئیں اور بینر آویزاں کئے گئے جن کے ذریعے ہوٹلوں کی حوصلہ افزائی کی گئی کہ وہ انسانی سمگلنگ کے خاتمہ کے لئے کی جانے والی کوششوں میں بڑھ چڑھ کر حصہ لیں۔

شفاء تعمیر ملت یونیورسٹی کے وائس چانسلر پروفیسر ڈاکٹر محمد اقبال نے اس موقع پر اپنے خیالات کا اظہار کرتے ہوئے انسانی سمگلنگ کے خاتمہ کے عالمی دن پر متحدہ اور مشترکہ طور پر منعقد کی جانے والی سرگرمیوں پر خوشی کا اظہار کیا۔ انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ شعبہ صحت و تدریس کے ایک مایہ ناز ادارے کی حیثیت سے شفاء تعمیر ملت یونیورسٹی انسانی حقوق کی اس سنگین خلاف ورزی کے حوالے سے اپنی اجتماعی ذمہ داری کی اہمیت سے بخوبی آگاہ ہے اور اس سے عہدہ برآ ہونے کے لئے کوشاں ہے۔

ایف آئی اے کے ڈائریکٹر انٹی ہیومن سمگلنگ جناب عالم شنواری نے کہا کہ اس اہم مقصد کے حق میں ملنے والی بھرپور حمایت پر ہم تمام لوگوں کے شکرگزار ہیں۔ انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ انسانی سمگلنگ بالخصوص اعضاء نکالنا انسانی حقوق کا ایک سنگین مسئلہ ہے جو فوری توجہ کا تقاضا کرتا ہے۔ جناب عالم شنواری نے اس اشتراک عمل پر یو این او ڈی سی کے ساتھ ساتھ شفاء تعمیر ملت یونیورسٹی کا بھی خاص طور پر شکریہ ادا کیا اور انسانی سمگلنگ کے خلاف اجتماعی کوششوں کی اہمیت پر زور دیا۔

تقریب کے آخر میں تمام شرکاء کا شکریہ ادا کیا گیا اور عوامی حلقوں پر زور دیا گیا کہ وہ اتحاد اور پختہ عزم پر مبنی اس جذبے کو آگے بڑھائیں اور انسانی تجارت کے خلاف جدوجہد کو پرعزم طریقے سے جاری رکھیں۔

Creating awareness on climate change: Senator Sherry Rehman launches UNDP’s Coffee Table Book “Fading Vistas - Beauty of Northern Pakistan”

Islamabad, 27 July 2023—Senator Sherry Rehman, Federal Minister, Ministry of Climate Change & Environmental, with Mr. Samuel Rizk UNDP’s Resident Representative to Pakistan, launched UNDP’s Coffee Table Book: Fading Vistas – Beauty of Northern Pakistan. The event also exhibited photographs of the breathtaking scenery of the mountains, lakes, and glaciers of the 24 GLOF-II Project valleys in Gilgit Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The event is part of GLOF-II Project – a joint initiative by the Ministry of Climate Change and UNDP, with the support of the Green Climate Fund.

The book, “Fading Vistas” holds a collection of exquisitely curated photographs of Northern Pakistan's valleys, glaciers, and mountains to reinforce the need to safeguard them from the devastating impacts of climate change. The book also illustrates some of the devastating effects of glacial lake outburst floods and GLOF-II interventions to support affected communities.

The Federal Minister, Senator Sherry Rehman, on working relentlessly on climate adaptation to reduce Pakistan’s climate vulnerability, stated, “Our deep connection to the wondrous ecological systems of the Earth can in no way be negated or undermined, as without the grandeur and benevolence of our natural habitats – the splendid valleys, vast forests, and monumental mountains; we would truly cease to exist.”

The Honorable Minister reinforced how Pakistan bears the brunt of global warming despite its low emissions rate, exacerbating poverty, gender inequality, and loss of livelihoods.

On the occasion, UNDP’s Resident Representative to Pakistan, Mr. Samuel Rizk, highlighted, “Climate Change is a huge development challenge. Apart from the global impacts, it is hitting the poorest and the most vulnerable first and hardest, as they rely on natural resources to support their livelihoods. UNDP is committed to building climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable policies into development plans and programmes in Pakistan.”

Pakistan’s rich topography ranges from the highest glacier-covered mountains to the deepest seas, hosting rich biodiversity and ecosystems. However, climate change makes these natural habitats susceptible to the grave danger of perishing. While our Earth is warning us of rising sea levels owing to large glacial melts, torrential rains, and unprecedented floods and droughts, sustainable climate action needs to be taken to safeguard these endangered sights and ecosystems.

UNDP’s GLOF-II project works in 16 valleys of Gilgit Baltistan and 8 valleys in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It empowers communities to identify and manage risks associated with GLOFs and related impacts of Climate Change, strengthen public services to lower the risk of disasters related to GLOFs, and improve community preparedness and disaster response. The project also supports the development of sustainable options for livelihoods in project areas, with a particular focus on the participation of women in ensuring food security and livelihoods.
