United States commits US$1 Million to UNICEF’s Flood Response in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, 2 October 2025: The United States Government, through the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM), has committed US$1 million to support UNICEF’s emergency response for children and families affected by the recent floods in Pakistan. Through this contribution, UNICEF will reach over 65,000 people, including pregnant women and children, with life-saving nutrition and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) support.

“Children are always the most vulnerable in emergencies, facing the compounded threats of malnutrition and deadly waterborne diseases. This timely support from the United States enables us to deliver life-saving services and help restore dignity and hope to families who have suffered loss and displacement as they begin the difficult journey of recovery,” said Pernille Ironside, UNICEF Representative in Pakistan.

This year’s monsoon floods have claimed over 1,000 lives, including 275 children, displaced 2.7 million people and disrupted essential services like health, nutrition, water and education that children rely on. 

With this new funding, UNICEF will screen 32,500 children for malnutrition, provide treatment to 2,000 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition (SAM), and deliver multi-micronutrient supplements to 32,500 children and 32,500 pregnant and breastfeeding women and caregivers. In addition, more than 50,000 people will gain access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene services, including restoration of damaged water systems, installation of temporary toilets, and distribution of hygiene kits.

Following flash floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and devastating floods across southern Punjab, the needs are critical. UNICEF is working closely with the Government of Pakistan and partners to deliver emergency support to reach the most vulnerable children and women and ensure they are not left behind.

UNICEF’s humanitarian response is part of its 2025 Humanitarian Action for Children (HAC) Appeal, which seeks US$140.9 million to meet urgent needs of children and families affected by emergencies in Pakistan.

Pakistan takes major step towards tackling organised crime with support from UNODC and UK Government

Islamabad, 1 October 2025 — A two-day workshop was held in Islamabad to help Pakistan develop its first National Strategy Against Organised Crime. The event was organised by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in partnership with the Government of Pakistan and the UK Government.

The workshop brought together senior officials from law enforcement agencies across Pakistan, as well as experts from civil society, academia, and international partners. Together, they discussed how to better respond to serious crimes such as drug trafficking, human trafficking, cybercrime, and other illegal activities that cross borders and threaten public safety.

Participants included representatives from key national bodies such as the Ministry of Interior, Anti-Narcotics Force, Federal Investigation Agency, and provincial police forces. Officials from the British High Commission, including Deputy High Commissioner Mr Matt Cannell, also attended.

Troels Vester, UNODC Country Representative in Pakistan, said:

“Organised crime affects everyone — it weakens institutions, puts communities at risk, and often targets the most vulnerable. This workshop shows the strong commitment of Pakistan, the UK, and UNODC to work together and build safer, more resilient societies.”

Raja Riffat Mukhtar Director General, Federal Investigation Agency, highlighted:

The growing complexity of organized crime, noting that it cuts across borders and sectors. He emphasized that such crime cannot be viewed in isolation, as its impact is felt worldwide. He underscored that organized crime is a global threat requiring collective action and strong international cooperation

Matt Cannell, Deputy British High Commissioner to Pakistan, said:

 “This partnership reflects our shared commitment to tackling serious threats that affect both our countries. Through strong cooperation with the Government of Pakistan and UNODC, we are helping build a safer, more resilient future grounded in inclusive justice.

During the workshop, delegates explored how to improve coordination between agencies, share intelligence, and strengthen laws to stop criminal networks. They also focused on protecting victims and ensuring that efforts to fight crime respect human rights and promote gender equality.

The discussions were based on UNODC’s global toolkit for tackling organised crime, and centred around four key areas: Prevent, Pursue, Protect, and Promote. Participants shared ideas on how to improve investigations, build capacity, and monitor progress.

The outcomes of the workshop will help shape Pakistan’s national strategy, which aims to make communities safer, support justice, and contribute to long-term peace and development.

  منظم جرائم کے خاتمہ کے لئے یو این او ڈی سی اور برطانوی حکومت کے تعاون سے پاکستان کی ایک اہم کاوش

  اسلام آباد (یکم اکتوبر 2025 )منظم جرائم کے خاتمہ کی پہلی قومی حکمتِ عملی وضع کرنے کے لئے دو روزہ ورکشاپ اسلام آباد میں منعقد کی گئی۔ ورکشاپ کا اہتمام اقوامِ متحدہ دفتر برائے انسدادِ منشیات و جرائم (یو این او ڈی سی) نے حکومتِ پاکستان اور برطانوی حکومت کے اشتراک  سے کیا۔ ورکشاپ میں پاکستان بھر سے قانون نافذ کرنے والے اداروں کے سینئر عہدیداروں سمیت سِوِل سوسائٹی، شعبہ تدریس اور بین الاقوامی پارٹنرز کے ماہرین نے حصہ لیا۔ اس موقع پر منشیات کی تجارت، انسانی سمگلنگ، سائبرکرائم جیسے سنگین جرائم اور ان غیرقانونی سرگرمیوں سے نمٹنے کے بہتر طریقوں پر تبادلہ خیالات کیا گیا جو سرحدوں کے آر پار ہوتی ہیں اور تحفظِ عامہ کے لئے خطرات کا باعث بنتی ہیں۔

 شرکاء میں وزارتِ داخلہ، انسدادِ منشیات فورس، وفاقی تحقیقاتی ادارہ، اور صوبائی پولیس فورسز سمیت اہم قومی اداروں کے نمائندے شامل تھے۔ برطانیہ کے ڈپٹی ہائی کمشنر جناب میٹ کینیل سمیت برطانوی ہائی کمیشن کے عہدیداروں نے بھی ورکشاپ میں شرکت کی۔

 پاکستان میں یو این او ڈی سی کے کنٹری ریپریزنٹیٹو ٹروئلز ویسٹر نے اپنے خیالات کا اظہار کرتے ہوئے کہا کہ:

 "منظم جرائم ہر فرد کو متاثر کرتے ہیں، یہ اداروں کو کمزور کرتے ہیں، کمیونٹی کو خطرات سے دوچار کرتے ہیں اور اکثر انتہائی کمزور افراد اور طبقات ان کا نشانہ بنتے ہیں۔ یہ ورکشاپ پاکستان، برطانیہ اور یو این او ڈی سی کے مضبوط عزم کا اظہار ہے کہ مل کر کام کرتے ہوئے ہم معاشرے کو زیادہ محفوظ اور زیادہ مضبوط بنائیں گے۔"

 انٹی منی لانڈرنگ کے ڈائریکٹر جنرل ڈاکٹر احسان صادق نے کہا کہ:

 یہ ورکشاپ منظم جرائم کے پیچیدہ چیلنج سے نمٹنے کے لئے ہمارے مشترکہ عزم کی عکاسی کرتی ہے۔ حکومتِ پاکستان، یو این او ڈی سی، بین الاقوامی پارٹنرز اور ملکی متعلقہ فریقوں کے ساتھ مل کر کام کرتے ہوئے ہم مضبوط اور مربوط اقدامات کی بنیاد رکھ رہے ہیں۔ ہماری اس مشترکہ کاوش کا مقصد یہی ہے کہ کمیونٹیز کو زیادہ محفوظ بنائیں، اپنے شہریوں کے حقوق کا تحفظ کریں اور ایک ایسا مستقبل یقینی بنائیں جس میں انصاف اور سلامتی سب کی رسائی میں ہو۔"

 وفاقی تحقیقاتی ادارہ کے ڈائریکٹر جنرل راجہ رفعت مختار نے:

 منظم جرائم کی بڑھتی پیچیدگیوں پر روشنی ڈالی اور کہا کہ یہ سرحدوں یا کسی خاص شعبوں کے پابند نہیں ہیں۔ انہوں نے زور دیا کہ ان جرائم کو کسی خاص حدود یا دائرے میں رکھ کر زیرِغور نہیں لایا جا سکتا کیونکہ ان کے اثرات پوری دنیا میں محسوس ہوتے ہیں۔ انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ منظم جرائم ایک عالمی خطرہ ہیں جن کا جواب دینے کے لئے اجتماعی اقدامات اور بھرپور بین الاقوامی تعاون ضروری ہے۔ "

 پاکستان میں برطانیہ کے ڈپٹی ہائی کمشنر میٹ کینیل نے کہا کہ:

 "یہ اشتراک دونوں ممالک پر اثرانداز ہونے والے سنگین خطرات سے نمٹنے کے لئے ہمارے مشترکہ عزم کی عکاسی کرتا ہے۔ حکومتِ پاکستان اور یو این او ڈی سی کے ساتھ اپنے بھرپور تعاون کے ذریعے ہم سب کے لئے انصاف پر مبنی ایک محفوظ اور مضبوط مستقبل کی تعمیر میں مدد دے رہے ہیں۔ "

 ورکشاپ کے دوران شرکاء نے جرائم پیشہ نیٹ ورکس کو روکنے کے لئے اداروں اور ایجنسیوں کے درمیان رابطے بہتر بنانے، انٹیلی جنس معلومات کے باہمی تبادلے اور قوانین کو مستحکم بنانے کے طریقوں کا جائزہ لیا۔ انہوں نے متاثرہ افراد کے تحفظ اور اس امر کو یقینی بنانے کے طریقوں پر بھی غور کیا کہ جرائم سے نمٹنے کی ان کوششوں میں انسانی حقوق کا احترام کیا جائے اور ان کے ذریعے صنفی برابری کو فروغ دیا جائے۔

 سیشنز کے دوران ہونے والی بحثوں میں منظم جرائم سے نمٹنے کے لئے یو این او ڈی سی کی "گلوبل ٹول کٹ" سے استفادہ کیا گیا اور گفتگو میں ان چار اہم شعبوں کو مرکزی حیثیت حاصل رہی:  بچاؤ ، تعاقب، تحفظ اور فروغ(Prevent, Pursue, Protect, and Promote)  ۔

 اس ورکشاپ کے نتائج سے پاکستان کی قومی حکمتِ عملی کی تشکیل میں مدد ملے گی جس کا مقصد کمیونٹیز کو زیادہ محفوظ بنانا، انصاف یقینی بنانے میں مدد دینا اور دوررس بنیاد پر امن و ترقی کے فروغ میں اپنا کردار ادا کرنا ہے۔
