Thai celebrity Cindy Sirinya Bishop campaigning for women’s rights as new UN Women Regional Goodwill Ambassador for Asia and the Pacific

Bangkok, Thailand -- Thai celebrity and rights activist Cindy Sirinya Bishop is working to stop violence and other abuses against women as the newly appointed UN Women Regional Goodwill Ambassador for Asia and the Pacific.

Bishop, 41, is a model and actress who is best known as the host of Asia's Next Top Model, a television show broadcast in most countries in the region.

During her 2-year appointment, which began in September, Bishop is representing UN Women to promote gender equality and other UN Women priority goals, raise funds and build partnerships. She is promoting public awareness through education, dialogue and cooperation with schools, communities and governments.

“It is truly an honour to become the first UN Women Goodwill Ambassador to Asia and the Pacific,” Bishop said. “My mother instilled in me very early on a strong sense of justice and fierce belief in the resilience and strength of women, and these values continue to guide me today. I am so deeply grateful for the opportunity to work towards achieving greater gender equality in the region, especially in the areas of eliminating gender-based violence and in providing equal opportunity for girls and women to realize their full potential.”

Bishop is one of Thailand’s leading campaigners on ending violence against women.

In early 2018, she came across a newspaper headline about Thai authorities telling women to not look “sexy” if they want to avoid sexual assault during the Thai new year festival. Having experienced violence herself at the festival, Bishop spoke out in a social media video hashtagged #DontTellMeHowtoDress. #DontTellMeHowtoDress quickly evolved into a movement championing gender equality and has been extensively covered by local and international media.

In July 2018, Bishop collaborated with UN Women to organize the Social Power Exhibition Against Sexual Assault. The exhibition was supported by United Nations agencies; the governments of Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore; the Association of Southeast Asian Nations; embassies; the media; and civil society and youth groups. Bishop worked with civil society organizations in the Philippines and Singapore on #DontTellMeHowToDress.

In November 2018, Bishop received the “Activist of the Year Award” from the office of the Prime Minister of Thailand.

Bishop also is the Knowledge Director of Dragonfly360, a regional platform that advocates for gender equality in Asia. She is writing a series of children’s books on safety, rights and respectful relationships.

 “Your strong commitment to ending violence against women, demonstrated through your creation of the #DontTellMeHowtoDress movement and your work with UN Women so far, has shown you to be a compelling and eloquent advocate,” UN Women Regional Director Mohammad Naciri said in inviting Bishop to be UN Women regional goodwill ambassador.

بنکاک، تھائی لینڈ – تھائی لینڈ کی مشہور شخصیت اور حقوق کی  فعال کارکن سنڈی سیرینیا بشپ، ایشیا اور پیسیفک کے لئے یو این ویمن کی علاقائی خیرسگالی سفیر مقرر ہونے کے بعد خواتین پر تشدد اور دیگر اقسام کی بدسلوکی  روکنے کی مہم  پر بھرپور انداز میں کام کر رہی ہیں۔

اکتالیس سالہ سنڈی بشپ ایک مشہور ماڈل اور اداکارہ ہیں جنہوں نے خطے کے بیشتر ممالک میں نشر ہونے والے ٹی وی شو "ایشیاز نیکسٹ ٹاپ ماڈل" کی میزبان کی حیثیت سے خاصی شہرت حاصل کی۔

سنڈی بشپ کو ستمبر 2020 میں  دوسالہ مدت کے لئے خیرسگالی سفیر مقرر کیا گیا اور وہ صنفی مساوات  سمیت یو این ویمن کے ترجیحی مقاصد کے فروغ، فنڈز مہم اور پارٹنرشپس کی ترویج سے متعلق سرگرمیوں میں یو این ویمن کی نمائندگی کر رہی ہیں۔ وہ مختلف حکومتوں، سکولوں اور کمیونٹیز کے ساتھ تعاون، ڈائیلاگ اور شعور و آگاہی جیسی سرگرمیوں کے ذریعے لوگوں میں آگاہی پیدا کرنے کے لئے بھی کام کر رہی ہیں۔

سنڈی بشپ نے اپنے خیالات کا اظہار کرتے ہوئے ایشیا اور پیسیفک  کے لئے یو این ویمن کی پہلی خیرسگالی سفیر کے طور پر تقرری کو اپنے لئے اعزاز قرار دیا اور کہا کہ میری والدہ نے چھوٹی عمر سے ہی میرے اندر انصاف اور عورتوں کی ہمت و قوت پر پختہ یقین کا بھرپور احساس پیدا کیا اور یہ اقدار آج بھی میری رہنمائی کرتی ہیں۔ میں خطے میں صنفی برابری کی صورتحال کو بہتر بنانے کے  ساتھ ساتھ صنفی تشدد کے خاتمہ اور لڑکیوں اور خواتین کو ان کی بھرپور استعداد کے مطابق برابر مواقع فراہم کرنے کی اس جدوجہد میں اپنا کردار ادا کرنے کا یہ شاندار موقع ملنے پر انتہائی شکرگزار ہوں۔

سنڈی بشپ، تھائی لینڈ میں بھی خواتین پر تشدد کے خاتمہ کی مہم میں پیش پیش رہی ہیں۔

2018 کے اوائل میں  تھائی اخبارات میں شائع ہونے والی یہ خبر سنڈی بشپ کی نظر سے بھی گزری جس میں تھائی حکام نے خواتین کو مشورہ دیا تھا کہ اگر وہ سال نو کے جشن کے موقع پر جنسی تشدد سے بچنا چاہتی ہیں تو "جا‍‍زب" نظر نہ آئیں۔ سنڈی بشپ خود بھی ماضی میں اس تہوار کے موقع پر تشدد کا سامنا کر چکی تھیں، لہٰذا انہوں نے اس پر آواز اٹھائی اور "ڈونٹ ٹیل میں ہاؤ ٹو ڈریس" (#DontTellMeHowtoDress) کے ہیش ٹیگ کے ساتھ سوشل میڈیا پر اپنی وڈیو شیئر کی۔ اس ہیش ٹیگ نے بڑی تیزی کے ساتھ صنفی برابری کی ایک تحریک کی شکل اختیار کر لی جسے ملکی اور بین الاقوامی میڈیا نے بھرپور کوریج دی۔

جولائی 2018 میں سنڈی بشپ نے یو این ویمن کے ساتھ مل کر جنسی تشدد کے خلاف سماجی قوت کی نمائش   کا اہتمام کیا۔ نمائش کی حمایت کرنے والوں میں اقوام متحدہ کے ادارے، تھائی لینڈ، فلپائن اور سنگاپور کی حکومتیں، ایسوسی ایشن آف ساؤتھ ایسٹ ایشین نیشنز، غیرملکی سفارتخانے، میڈیا، سول سوسائٹی اور نوجوانوں کے گروپ بھی شامل تھے۔ سنڈی بشپ نے فلپائن اور سنگاپور کی حکومتوں کے ساتھ مل کر بھی "ڈونٹ ٹیل می ہاؤ ٹو ڈریس"  پر کام کیا۔

نومبر 2018 میں سنڈی بشپ کو تھائی لینڈ کے وزیراعظم کی جانب سے "ایکٹیوسٹ آف دی ایئر" کا ایوارڈ دیا گیا۔

سنڈی بشپ، ایشیا میں صنفی برابری کے لئے سرگرم علاقائی پلیٹ فارم ڈریگن فلائی 360،   کی نالج ڈائریکٹر بھی ہیں۔ وہ تحفظ، حقوق اور احترام پر مبنی تعلقات پر بچوں کے لئے سلسلہ وار کتب بھی تحریر کر رہی ہیں۔

سنڈی بشپ کو یو این ویمن کی علاقائی خیرسگالی سفیر بننے کی دعوت دیتے ہوئے یو این ویمن کے ریجنل ڈائریکٹر محمد ناصری نے کہا کہ "خواتین پر تشدد کے خاتمہ کے لئے آپ کا پختہ عزم، جس کا اظہار آپ 'ڈونٹ ٹیل می ہاؤ ٹو ڈریس' جیسی مہم اور یو این ویمن کے لئے اپنی اب تک کی خدمات کی شکل میں کر چکی ہیں، یہ ظاہر کرتا ہے کہ آپ ان مقاصد کی مضبوط اور پرزور حامی ہیں"۔

یو این ویمن، دنیا بھر میں صنفی برابری اور خواتین کی خودمختاری کے عمل کو تیز کرنے کے لئے سرگرم عمل اقوام متحدہ کا ادارہ ہے۔
