MESSAGE ON INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR DISASTER RISK REDUCTION

2023 has shattered temperature records, and seen record drought, fire and floods around the world. Poverty and inequality are exacerbating these disasters.

Those with least are often at greatest risk from extreme weather. They may live in places that are more susceptible to flooding and drought; and they have fewer resources to deal with damage and to recover from it. They suffer disproportionately as a result, and may be pushed further into poverty.

Fighting inequality for a resilient future, is the theme of this year’s International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. Countries must work to break the cycle of poverty and disaster by honouring the Paris Agreement, striving to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

We must also tackle inequality at the global level, by operationalizing the Loss and Damage Fund at COP28 this year and ensuring that every person on Earth is covered by an early warning system by 2027.

This International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction let us reaffirm our commitment to investing in resilience and adaptation, and building a safe and just future for everyone, everywhere.

Together with Government & other UN partners, FAO marks WFD with Clean River Indus Drive

Jamshoro, Sindh (12/10/2023): To mark World Food Day (WFD) with the theme "Water is Life, Water is Food. Leave no one behind," the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in partnership with the Government, World Food Programme (WFP), International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and Oxfam GB, organized a riverbank cleanup near Kotri, Jamshoro in Sindh along the River Indus. Over 500 participants from universities, UN agencies, NGOs, government departments, farmers’ community and more collected and safely disposed of debris items, highlighting the vital role of clean water in agriculture and well-being.

World Food Day, celebrated annually promotes food system transformation. This year's theme, underscores water's crucial role in agriculture and community well-being. It aligns with the Living Indus Initiative, a collaboration between the Government of Pakistan and UN agencies addressing ecological health in the Indus River Basin in the face of climate challenges.

On this WFD, FAO Pakistan along with the Government and other UN agencies working in Pakistan is launching the "Clean Indus" campaign, focusing on water conservation and quality improvement to enhance food production. This campaign aims to raise awareness and inspire action to protect the Indus River.

Haji Khan Jamali Chief Engineer Sindh, Asadullah Khoso, Assistant Deputy Commissioner, Jamshoro and Agha Fakher, Director General Food Authority Sindh while addressing the audience emphasized on the importance of water in agriculture, food production and food security. They highlighted that irrigation resources are depleting rapidly. We need to focus on repair and restoration of water resources for our future generation.

Representatives from farmers’ community, Zulfiqar Ali Kachelo and Naghma Naz shared the problems faced by the farmers’ community and importance of water. They told that water is vital for the farmers. They can survive with fertilizers and nutrients for their fields but it is impossible to survive without water.

Florence Rolle, FAO Representative in Pakistan highlighted the country's agricultural significance, with its extensive irrigated land ranking it as the world’s third largest in this category. This underscores the relevance of the "Clean Indus" initiative in Pakistan.

The Indus River, a cultural and economic cornerstone of Pakistan, faces challenges such as glacier melting and pollution. The FAO's "Clean Indus" campaign aims to raise awareness and drive collaborative action. It emphasizes the potential for ecosystem restoration, echoing success stories from other nation.

Coco Ushiyama, WFD Country Director, stressed water's vital role in life and the impact of climate change and pollution. The World Food Programme supports the Clean Indus Drive to restore the Indus Basin ecosystem, ensuring water sources and food security.

In a 2023 UN report, Pakistan is among the 36 most water-stressed nations. Fernanda Thomaz da Rocha, IFAD Pakistan Country Director, called for wise water management, efficient food production, equitable water distribution, and aquatic food system preservation. Syed Shahnawaz Ali, Oxfam in Pakistan's Country Director, highlighted water's importance in the climate crisis, emphasizing the need for collective efforts across sectors.

Abdullah Fadil, UNICEF Representative in Pakistan, emphasized the interconnection of child malnutrition and safe drinking water. With Pakistan's growing population and increasing pressure on water and food supplies, safeguarding these resources is crucial for addressing malnutrition and ensuring children's health and cognitive development.

A series of similar events were also organized in all provinces of Pakistan to raise awareness of common masses about the vital role of water for our existence.

حکومت اور اقوام متحدہ کے دیگر اداروں کے اشتراک سے ایف اے او کی جانب سے کلین انڈس مہم کا آغاز

جامشورو، سندھ (12/10/2023): ادارہ خوراک و زراعت  برائے اقوام متحدہ (ایف اے او) نے "پانی زندگی ہے، پانی خوراک ہے، کسی کو پیچھے نہ چھوڑیں" کے موضوع کے ساتھ عالمی یوم خوراک (WFD) منانے کے لیے۔ حکومت، ورلڈ فوڈ پروگرام (WFP)، انٹرنیشنل فنڈ فار ایگریکلچر ڈویلپمنٹ (IFAD)، اقوام متحدہ کے بچوں کے فنڈ (UNICEF) اور Oxfam GB کے اشتراک سے سندھ میں کوٹری، جامشورو کے قریب دریائے سندھ کے کنارے صفائی کی ایک مہم کا اہتمام کیا۔ یونیورسٹیوں، اقوام متحدہ کی ایجنسیوں، این جی اوز، سرکاری محکموں اور ذرائع ابلاغ پر مشتمل 300 سے زائد شرکاء نے کچرا اور کوڑا کرکٹ صاف  کیا اور محفوظ طریقے سے ٹھکانے لگایا.اس اقدام کا مقصد زراعت، خوراک کی پیداوار اور مقامی آبادیوں کی مجموعی فلاح و بہبود کے لئے صاف پانی کی اہمیت کو اجاگر کرنا تھا

ہر سال منایا جانے والا عالمی یوم خوراک، خوراک کے نظام کی تبدیلی کو فروغ دیتا ہے۔ اس سال کا تھیم، زراعت اور سماجی بہبود میں پانی کے اہم کردار کو اجاگر کرتا ہے۔ یہ یہ تھیم لیونگ انڈس انیشی ایٹو کے اہداف سے ہم آہنگ ہے، جو حکومت پاکستان اور اقوام متحدہ کی ایجنسیوں کے درمیان ایک باہمی تعاون پر مبنی منصوبہ ہے، جو دریائے سندھ کے طاس کی ماحولیاتی صحت کی درستگی اور بحالی خاص طور پر موسمیاتی چیلنج سے نمٹنے کے لیے کے لیے وقف ہے،خوراک کے اس عالمی دن پر، FAO پاکستان حکومت اور پاکستان میں کام کرنے والے اقوام متحدہ کے دیگر اداروں کے ساتھ مل کر "کلین انڈس" مہم کا آغاز کر رہا ہے، جس میں خوراک کی پیداوار کو بڑھانے کے لیے پانی کے تحفظ اور معیار کی بہتری پر توجہ دی جائے گی۔ اس مہم کا مقصد بیداری پیدا کرنا اور دریائے سندھ کے تحفظ کے لیے کارروائی کی ترغیب دینا ہے۔

حاجی خان جمالی چیف انجینئر سندھ، اسد اللہ کھوسو، اسسٹنٹ ڈپٹی کمشنر جامشورو اور آغا فخر، ڈائریکٹر جنرل فوڈ اتھارٹی سندھ نے حاضرین سے خطاب کرتے ہوئے زراعت، خوراک کی پیداوار اور فوڈ سیکیورٹی میں پانی کی اہمیت پر زور دیا۔ انہوں نے روشنی ڈالی کہ آبپاشی کے وسائل تیزی سے ختم ہو رہے ہیں۔ ہمیں اپنی آنے والی نسل کے لیے آبی وسائل کی مرمت اور بحالی پر توجہ دینے کی ضرورت ہے۔

کسان برادری کے نمائندوں ذوالفقار علی کچیلو اور نغمہ ناز نے کسان برادری کو درپیش مسائل اور پانی کی اہمیت سے آگاہ کیا۔ انہوں نے بتایا کہ کسانوں کے لیے پانی بہت ضروری ہے۔ وہ اپنے کھیتوں کے لیے کھاد اور غذائی اجزاء کے ساتھ زندہ رہ سکتے ہیں لیکن پانی کے بغیر زندہ رہنا ناممکن ہے۔

پاکستان میں ایف اے او کی نمائندہ فلورنس رول نے ملک کی زرعی اہمیت پر روشنی ڈالی، اس کی وسیع آبپاشی والی زمین اسے اس زمرے میں دنیا کی تیسری بڑی زمین قرار دیتی ہے۔ یہ پاکستان میں "کلین انڈس" اقدام کی مطابقت کو واضح کرتا ہے۔

دریائے سندھ، جو پاکستان کی ثقافتی اور اقتصادی بنیاد ہے، کو گلیشیئر پگھلنے اور آلودگی جیسے چیلنجز کا سامنا ہے۔ ایف اے او کی "کلین انڈس" مہم کا مقصد آگاہی پیدا کرنا اور باہمی تعاون سے کام کرنا ہے۔ جس کے لیے آنے والے سالوں تک تمام لوگوں کی مستقل شرکت کی ضرورت ہے۔ تباہ شدہ ماحولیاتی نظام کی بحالی، جیسا کہ دوسرے ممالک میں حاصل کی گئی ہے، پاکستان میں بھی ممکن ہے۔

ڈبلیو ایف ڈی کی کنٹری ڈائریکٹر کوکو اوشیاما نے زندگی میں پانی کے اہم کردار اور موسمیاتی تبدیلی اور آلودگی کے اثرات پر زور دیا۔ ورلڈ فوڈ پروگرام انڈس بیسن ماحولیاتی نظام کو بحال کرنے کے لیے کلین انڈس ڈرائیو کی حمایت کرتا ہے، پانی کے ذرائع اور خوراک کی حفاظت کو یقینی بناتا ہے۔

اقوام متحدہ کی 2023 کی ایک رپورٹ میں پاکستان 36 سب سے زیادہ پانی کی کمی کا شکار ممالک میں شامل ہے۔ IFAD پاکستان کی کنٹری ڈائریکٹر فرنندا تھوماز دا روچا نے پانی کے دانشمندانہ انتظام، موثر خوراک کی پیداوار، پانی کی منصفانہ تقسیم اور آبی خوراک کے نظام کے تحفظ پر زور دیا۔ آکسفیم کے پاکستان کے کنٹری ڈائریکٹر سید شاہنواز علی نے آب و ہوا کے بحران میں پانی کی اہمیت کو اجاگر کرتے ہوئے تمام شعبوں میں اجتماعی کوششوں کی ضرورت پر زور دیا۔

پاکستان میں یونیسیف کے نمائندے عبداللہ فادل نے بچوں کی غذائی قلت اور پینے کے صاف پانی کے باہمی تعلق پر زور دیا۔ پاکستان کی بڑھتی ہوئی آبادی اور پانی اور خوراک کی رسد پر بڑھتے ہوئے دباؤ کے ساتھ، غذائی قلت سے نمٹنے اور بچوں کی صحت اور علمی نشوونما کو یقینی بنانے کے لیے ان وسائل کی حفاظت بہت ضروری ہے۔

ہمارے وجود کے لیے پانی کے اہم کردار کے بارے میں عام لوگوں میں شعور اجاگر کرنے کے لیے پاکستان کے تمام صوبوں میں اسی طرح کی تقریبات کا ایک سلسلہ بھی منعقد کیا گیا۔
