PRESS RELEASE

Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Climate Change visits UNDP’s projects in Gilgit Baltistan

Gilgit, 17 June 2021— Minister for Climate Change and Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) Malik Amin Aslam was in Gilgit Baltistan on a monitoring mission to visit UNDP’s project interventions in the region. He visited Shisper Glacier situated in Hassanabad Hunza where an Automated Weather Station (AWS) has been installed. With the support of Green Climate Fund, UNDP’S GLOF II project in partnership with Ministry of Climate Change will install more of these in 16 valleys of Gilgit Baltistan.

These Automated Weather Stations will build Pakistan Meteorological Department’s capacity for better monitoring, planning and coordination of any climate change induced disasters (particularly GLOFs). It provides real time data and will be accessible through the official website of PMD in near future.

Malik Amin Aslam also met community members of Passu, after a recent GLOF event, as well as project beneficiaries and community members in Nagar valley to ensure the government’s support in carrying out activities to prevent losses to infrastructure and livelihoods.
